Hong Kong, 11 August 2017 – Young people in the region will join experts and other stakeholders in the cause for decent and sustainable housing as the 6th Asia-Pacific Housing Forum presents its inaugural Youth Congress. The session will convene local and regional youth leaders to articulate their roles in advancing affordable housing as a key factor in achieving equitable growth in the region.

"With almost two billion young people in Asia-Pacific, most of whom are eager to give back to their communities, there is a huge opportunity in the region to engage the youth as partners in fostering sustainable development," said Habitat for Humanity's Asia-Pacific vice president Rick Hathaway. "Today, by taking action in their local communities, schools and civil society groups, Asia-Pacific youth is taking active steps towards achieving sustainable social changes,” said Hathaway.

During the APHF6 Youth Congress, youth participants will center their discussions around the implications of Sustainable Development Goal 11 and its meaning to young people in Asia-Pacific; "Housing at the Center" within the context of SDG 11, New Urban Agenda and sustainable communities and; the role of youth in achieving these initiatives through local and regional actions.

Habitat has long recognized the potential of partnering with the youth, having for years, implemented Habitat Young Leaders' Build, a youth-oriented platform that mobilizes volunteers and supporters in the region to raise awareness of the need for sustainable and affordable housing. This year, more than three million youth volunteers participated in various capacity building activities, house and community builds, and fundraising across 18 participating countries in the region.

The 6th APHF is happening at the JW Marriot Hotel in Hong Kong, 4-7 September 2017. The Youth Congress takes place 12.30-2.30pm, 5 September 2017.
