Viet Nam hosts the 6th Meeting of GMS Southern Tourism Corridor

(TITC) – On 14 August, Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) coordinated with Can Tho City’s People Committee organized the 6th Meeting of GMS Southern Tourism Corridor with the participation of delegations from Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and Viet Nam.

The southern tourism corridor (STC) is an important transport route of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). STC consists of 13 provinces, of which Viet Nam has 5 provinces namely An Giang, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Can Tho, Kien Giang and Ho Chi Minh City.

At the event, representative of Cambodian delegation summed up cooperation activities at the 5th Meeting of Southern Corridor Tourism in Cambodia and shared information of Cambodia tourism statistics.

Within the framework of cooperation on facilitation of travel and border crossing between the GMS’s southern countries, an international seaport linking Sihanoukville (Kampot Province, Cambodia) and Phu Quoc (Kien Giang Province, Viet Nam) has been built. The port in Kampot Province will be completed by the end of 2019 and Cai Vong port in Phu Quoc is being completed. In March 2019, Cambodian Ministry of Tourism worked with Kien Giang Province’s tourism sector to open a new voyage tours between the two countries.

In order to enhance the quality of management and marketing of tourism in GMS countries, Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand organized the Workshop on Sustainable Tourism management at Cultural Heritage sites in GMS on March 2019. The workshop offered the opportunity for heritage site managers, tourism officers and tour operator/tour guides in GMS countries increasing skill in managing and developing cultural heritage tourism in sustainable manners.

From 2019, Thailand has also been implementing regional linkage products called Experience ASEAN Pop Culture including Graffiti in old town Battambang, Cambodia (1st June); Gastronomy in Mandalay, Malaysia (16th July); STC blogger famtrip on gastronomy tourism in Chanthburi, Rayong (Thailand), Kampot (Cambodia) and Phu Quoc (Viet Nam) (20-26th August).

Being the first time attending the Meeting of Southern Tourism Corridor, Myanmar delegation introduced the potential of Myanmar tourism with 9 outstanding tourist destinations and the products of caravan tourism and island tourism. Myanmar also expressed the desire to strengthen cooperation with STC members countries and create more investment opportunities in Myeik Archipelago.

Attending the meeting, Ms. Tran Phuong Nhung – Vice Director of International Cooperation Department (VNAT) presented Vietnam tourism performances, STC implemented activities such as organizing Travex Fair beside ATF 2019, joining car caravan tour through Cambodia, Thailand and Viet Nam in July 2019.

About the STC upcoming tourism events, she informed that in September, Mekong Delta Tourism Connecting Forum and Cambodian Night will be held in the framework of ITE HCMC in Ho Chi Minh City; Viet Nam Tourism Association will organize VITM Hanoi 2020 from 01 to 04 April with the theme “Heritage – Power of Tourism Development”.

At the meeting, VNAT also called member countries to attend VITM Can Tho with the theme “Mekong Delta Tourism Development” from November 29 to December 12, 2019.

Discussing at the meeting, the participants emphasized the importance of close links between member provinces and tourism businesses. The delegates also suggested that in the future, tourism management bodies should have regular dialogue with tourism enterprises in order to promptly solve their difficulties.

After the meeting, VNAT organized farmtrip for delegates to survey Viet Nam’s sea and river tourism products from 14 to 17 August in Can Tho City, Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province, and An Giang Province.

As scheduled, the 7th Meeting on Southern Tourism Corridor will be held in Thailand in 2020.
