The best non-Islamic countries for Muslim visitors are Singapore, Thailand and the UK, followed by South Africa and Hong Kong, according to the newly released MasterCard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index 2017. The index defines non-Islamic countries as those which are not members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The index takes into account various factors such as family friendliness of a destination, safety, halal food and accommodation options, prayer space access, air connectivity and visa regulation, among others, and derives a point score from this.

The index also has a Muslim country ranking whose top five destinations are Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, nations that also lead the overall rating of all countries as per their score.

This year’s index, which covers 130 destinations, showed that a number of non-OIC destinations in Asia moved up the rankings, the result of a concerted effort to adapt their services to cater to and attract Muslim travelers.

The least Muslim-friendly countries in Southeast Asia are Vietnam Cambodia and Laos, although Myanmar is not on the list.

The least Muslim-friendly countries worldwide are all Catholic nations in Latin America, namely Nicaragua, Bolivia, Uruguay, El Salvador and Colombia.

Last year there were 121 million Muslim travelers globally, up from 117 million in 2015. This is forecast to grow to 156 million visitors by 2020, around 10 per cent of the total number of global travelers. It is projected that the Muslim travel market will grow to $220 billion in travel spending by 2020 and $300 billion by 2026.
