Singapore interior designers win top accolades at second edition of Singapore Interior Design Awards (SIDA)

SINGAPORE, March 9, 2018 --( ASIA TODAY )-- Singapore interior designers swept 33 awards including 3 golds and the SIDA Concept Award, at the Singapore Interior Design Awards (SIDA) 2017 Gala Night & Awards Presentation which celebrates the best and brightest in the interior design industry and their projects which were either conceptualized or completed in 2017. The trophy haul by Singapore interior designers accounted for 22% of all SIDA 2017 awards presented.

The event, held at the Pan Pacific Hotel today, was graced by Senior Minister of State for Law and Finance, Ms Indranee Thurai Rajah. The event was attended by the who's who from the local and global interior design industry.

SIDA is an annual interior design award organized by the Society of Interior Designers, Singapore (SIDS) to recognize and honour design excellence in the global interior design industry. SIDS had opened SIDA to all interior designers, space designers and architects who share the common goal of creating better spaces through sensible, responsible, and innovative design solutions.

SIDA 2017 Awards attracted significant interest among local and overseas interior designers. Award submissions were received from around the world including Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. Overall, there were 92 unique winners.

The record entries for the SIDA 2017 awards are strong testimonies to reinforce Singapore's position as a beacon for the global design industry. The outstanding performance of the local interior designers also reflects their high professional standards which are well-recognised globally.

The medal haul is certainly a big win for them as well as for Singapore's local interior design profession. The winning streak of local designers also paints a bright future for interior design professionals. Professional Services, such as interior design, are a key growth sector for Singapore.

The professional services sector is expected to grow 4.6 per cent every year from 2015 to reach a value-add of S$31 billion by 2020 (Source : The Straits Times - January 24, 2018) Singapore is well-positioned to be a market leader in high-value, specialist services and to capture the demand for such services. To fuel further growth for the industry, the Society of Interior Designers Singapore or SIDS will develop a roadmap to transform the sector so that design professionals can seize opportunities ahead to enhance competitiveness and drive long-term growth.

Top Wins for SIDA 2017
Amid stiff competition, the Singapore-based spatial design studio, UPSTAIRS_, helmed by Dennis Cheok clinched SIDA 2017 gold in the Residential – Landed category for Ply House, a privately-owned house in Singapore.

The winning entry features an elegant home which meld ancestral Chinese culture with modern architectural designs. The exterior features 100-year-old clay bricks salvaged from a Chinese village while the interior is made almost entirely out of wood.

Local commercial interior design firm, Orb Associates Pte Ltd ("Orb Associates") also bagged two golds in the SIDA Concept competition. One in the Food and Beverage (F&B) category for a rooftop bar entitled “MBC BUFFET LOUNGE AND ROOF”, and the other in the Public Institutions category for “Medical Suites”. Orb Associates also did well in the SIDA Concept Awards ("Best of Best" Award) - which was introduced for the first time for the designs that are made in the conceptual stage.

The SIDA award 2017 has two categories: SIDA Concept Award and SIDA Awards. Commenting on the SIDA 2017 Gala Night & Awards, Mr Keat Ong, President of SIDS said: “SIDS is very happy with the hearty response we received for the second edition of our SIDA awards. The strong overseas participation and the outstanding performance of Singapore interior designers this year reinforces our leading stature in the industry. We are also very pleased that we have attracted strong support from overseas designers who trust us and believe in the significant value and credibility of our organisation and our awards. "

China also led the SIDA 2017 Awards medal tally - with 58 awards. This is followed by Taiwan and Malaysia.

The SIDA Gala Night & Awards Presentation was held from 630pm-11pm at the Pacific Ballroom of the Pan Pacific Hotel Singapore and the event was attended by more than 400 people.
