Kuala Lumpur, 20 August 2017 – National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of Malaysia launched the Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) funding programme at the 1st Asia Pacific (APAC) conference on Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) held in conjunction with the 33rd Annual Congress of the Malaysian Society of Nephrology (MSN).

The NKF’s PD funding programme aims to provide financial assistance to poor end-stage renal failure (ESRF) patients who wish to perform peritoneal dialysis – continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) or automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) treatment as their preferred choice of renal replacement therapy.

Speaking during the opening launch, Y.Bhg. Dato’ Dr. Zaki Morad bin Mohamad Zaher, Chairman of the NKF Board of Directors mentioned that “NKF’s peritoneal dialysis financial assistance programme started back in 2016 and build this programme as a way to provide funding for patients on CAPD and APD by dedicating a percentage of donations received for this initiative”.

“Given the rise of patients who undergo peritoneal dialysis treatment in Malaysia, NKF is looking at ways to help PD patients. The medical department and the welfare department will be implementing the NKF PD funding programme to assist poor ESRF patients to access to life sustaining peritoneal dialysis treatment,” said Dato’ Dr. Zaki Morad.

After the opening speech, a presentation was presented by Dr. Lee Wan Tin, Board Member of the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia explaining the patient criteria, application and disbursement process to understand the workflow of peritoneal dialysis funding programme.

“National Kidney Foundation Malaysia to issue a letter of guarantee to the relevant peritoneal dialysis supply company guaranteeing payment for PD supplies for 1 year for each successful applicant. The PD supplies will be delivered to the home of successful applicants by the peritoneal dialysis supply companies and an invoice shall be issued to NKF. After verification by NKF Welfare Department, the NKF Finance Department will disburse the appropriate payment to the PD supply company each month,” said Dr. Lee Wan Tin.

In conjunction with the launch, three major organisations namely Lucenxia, Fressenius and Baxter have offered their assistance to NKF in providing peritoneal dialysis treatment to poor and deserving kidney failure patients in Malaysia.

The Malaysian Dialysis and Transplant Registry reported that 3149 patients (9.4% of the dialysis population) were on peritoneal dialysis treatment in Malaysia in 2014 and currently the majority of Malaysian patients obtained their peritoneal dialysis treatment (both CAPD and APD) from Ministry of Health hospitals and University hospitals.
