New trends, forecasts, expert knowledge: SMM Istanbul 2014 is coming closer. Its conference programme will boast a rich selection of topics presented by top-level experts.

SMM Istanbul
Whether you look at containerships, tankers or bulk carriers, older vessels are increasingly being replaced by modern, larger, more efficient units. Not surprisingly, this gives greater importance to the ship breaking industry. Last year alone, around 1000 ships were recycled globally. The EU and the USA have passed technical regulations for recycling. Before a ship can be scrapped, all materials present on board must be entered into a material inventory list. Then a step-by-step dismantling plan is drafted. Ship breaking operations are primarily concentrated in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. However, shipbreaking firms in Turkey are gaining in importance because they offer significantly better working conditions. In particular, the cluster of shipbreaking companies in Aliağa, about 50 kilometres north of Izmir on the Turkish Aegean coast, is emerging as a leader. Aliağa as a recycling location is of interest especially for ships travelling the Mediterranean. New core requirements imposed by the EU, larger order volumes and advanced technology are challenges the ship recycling industry must face today.

First-hand Information
The "Ship Recycling & Ship Repair Summit Turkey" gives this topic a prominent place on the conference agenda of SMM Istanbul 2014 on 26 and 27 February. The new concept for SMM Istanbul is that of an international industry convention combining the fair with a conference. During the two-day event, internationally acclaimed experts will lecture on and discuss the future of the Turkish shipbuilding industry as well as other topics of vital interest to the global shipbuilding and supply industry. Other focal topics at the conference will include Building New Ships for The Middle East, LNG, Safety And Offshore Engineering, Coastal Ships And Mid-sized Tankers, and Mega Yachts. Participants will get detailed, first-hand information about opportunities, challenges and current trends. Manufacturers and users of marine technology will surely find these sessions inspiring.

Customer Focus And Distinguished Speakers
The venue is new, as well. To be closer to the customer, the 2014 convention will take place on the Asian side of the metropolis for the first time (Green Park Pendik Hotel & Convention Center), within earshot of the Tuzla shipyard district. SMM Istanbul is one of two international subsidiaries of SMM, the leading international maritime trade fair in Hamburg. Next year marks the third return of the fair to Istanbul. "We are thrilled about the long list of high-calibre speakers, visitors and exhibitors who have registered for the Istanbul fair," says Bernd Aufderheide, Chairman of the Board of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH. The market in Turkey is highly dynamic, Aufderheide continues. SMM Istanbul has established itself as an important meeting place for the industry, providing an ideal opportunity to catch up with new trends and market developments. "Exhibitors and visitors alike will be able to benefit from SMM Istanbul as a platform for networking, collaborating and arranging business deals," says Aufderheide. New business contacts established in Istanbul can then be followed up and intensified seven months later at SMM Hamburg. The great popularity of this industry fair is confirmed by the tremendous exhibitor response.
