The jury unanimous agreed to issue the award jointly to both

Lisbon, 20 May 2019 --( ASIA TODAY )-- The galleries Jahmek Contemporary Art, based out of Luanda, and Copperfield, from London, were the winners of the 2nd Opening Award. This prize is awarded to the best stand in the section with the reimbursement of the cost of the space in ARCOlisboa, and on this occasion it will be shared by both winners as the jury awarded the prize jointly.

The jury, comprising Pierre Bal-Blanc, curator and essayist, Athens/Paris; Virginija Januškeviciute, deputy director, CAC Vilnius; Agniya Mirgorodskaya, founder and curator of RIBOCA, Riga; Taaniel Raudsepp, director, Tallinn Art Hall, Tallinn; Beatrix Ruf, curator, Amsterdam; Joanna Zielinska, Scenic Arts curator, head of the Scenic Arts Department at the Contemporary Art Centre in Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw, and Ane Rodríguez, cultural director of Tabakalera, San Sebastián, unanimously decided to award the prize to Jahmek , of which they highlighted that “Tiago Borges contributed fully in the conception of the booth at Jahmek Contemporary Art, by creating a booth environment and installation which engaged the audience in a world of discrepant symbols and emblems. We want to celebrate the artist’s unique approach to historic and present meanings and high and low elements of Angolan and globalised cultures, references and identities.”

They also co-awarded the prize to the London gallery Copperfield, emphasising that “Copperfield gallery excelled in another approach presenting a select group out of the gallery programme to create a complex ensemble of works touching on themes of identity politics, futurology, fiction and translation of ideas into materials of high seduction. The jury gives the prize for a concise and convincing work of a gallery who is close to their artists’ vision.”

In ARCOlisboa 2019, the Jahmek gallery is presenting a piece by artist Tiago Borges. Copperfield, meanwhile, is attending with artists Achiampong & Blandy; Jane Bustin; Marco Godoy; Ella Littwitz; Daniel de Paula and David Rickard.
