Thursday, October 12, 2017: The 2017 Golden Pin Design Award concluded on September 27th at the National Taiwan University stadium in Taipei. Just 72 finalists — from China, Hong Kong, Japan, USA, and Germany — were chosen out of 455 selected entries.

The 2017 Golden Pin Concept Design Award Final Selection Jury chose six finalists, three of whom will win the Best Concept Design award. Entrants travelled from Taiwan, China, and Singapore, to discuss their concepts with the jury panel. For some of them, it was a priceless opportunity to get feedback on their concepts and identify some areas to improve.

The 2017 Golden Pin Design Award and Concept Design Award winners will be announced at a grand ceremony held in Taipei on December 7th. Winners will receive the coveted Best Design trophy, while winners of the Best Concept Design trophy also receive a NT$300,000 (approx. US$9,500) cash prize. A forum will be held on the same day, which is free and open to the public.

Comments from the Jury Chair

Kazuo Tanaka, Jury Chair and CEO of GK Design Group Inc., lays out his impression of this year’s entries and his basic criteria for judging them. He thinks the Golden Pin Design Award, in its 37th year, is attracting very diverse entries. He advocates the value of creativity and concept over aesthetics and beauty. “The overall performance of this year’s entrants is very good,” says Tanaka. “Many projects have innovative ideas. They are relative to the issues in people’s everyday life and trends in design.”

Reflecting on the Golden Pin Concept Design Award Final Selection, Jury Chair Tanaka points to the ethics behind design as a main factor in whether a concept is practical or not. “Design that addresses social concern is a big trend in the industry,” says Tanaka. “As designers, we are always trying to improve on the current situation.”

Comments from International Judges

Rossana Hu, Founding Partner of Neri&Hu Design and Research Office, based in London and Shanghai, sets the bar high for the Golden Pin Design Award finalists.

“I do see when, sometimes, the designer has a unique cultural interpretation or point of view, but it’s not like I’m going to take points away from them when it’s absent,” says Hu. What I am looking for is meaning and impact, the impact being on many levels.”

Martin Darbyshire, CEO of London-based design studio ‘tangerine’, appreciates the variety of design at the Golden Pin Design Award. Both the huaren design, targeting Chinese communities, and the more global design.

“Every time I judge in China, there are always at least ten tea sets, generally with the cup turned upside down on top,” says Darbyshire. “There is that cliché view of Chinese design. I think there is also a middle ground between Chinese and global. Quite simply, tastes differ and the way you design has to reflect that.”
