China Unicom to partner with Tencent in creation of e-sports lab

Aug 30, 2019 (China Knowledge) - One of China’s major telecommunications company, China Unicom (0762), is set to partner with Tencent Holdings Ltd (0700) to develop and build a 5G-powered e-sports laboratory in order to better target gaming enthusiasts with the up-and-coming 5G wireless technology.

Both companies will leverage on their technologies and expertise to collaborate in the research and development of new and innovative applications of 5G technology in e-sports.

The gaming industry within China has grew quickly in the recent years, with e-sports becoming highly popular among Chinese youths. It is estimated that there will be more than 300 mln users and players of e-sports in China by the end of 2019, with over 30% below the age of 35 years old.

Moreover, in the first half of 2019, the Chinese gaming and e-sports industry achieved strong and steady growth, with total revenue amounting to RMB 116.3 bln (USD 16.9 bln), up 10.8 percent year-on-year. This trend is set to continue for the rest of the year.

In a statement by China Unicom, the company aims to improve its telecom infrastructure by enhancing its technologies and processes, and ultimately tap on 5G technology to help drive the popularity of e-sports in China in the next decade. The partnership with Tencent, one of the world’s largest games developer and publisher, will enable both companies to achieve a win-win solution in the gaming industry.

The 5G-powered e-sports laboratory is set to be located in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province.
