May 30, 2019 (China Knowledge) - China Mobile, one of China’s three largest state-owned telecom carriers, will start selling its first batch of 5G smartphones in the first half of this year at a quarter of the price leading brands plan to charge.

The 5G smartphones will cost RMB 2,000 but will eventually fall to around RMB 1,000 according to vice president Jian Qin at the China Internet Audio and Video Convention held in Chengdu.

In addition, China Mobile is also exploring a multi-dimensional billing model that will grant users access to 5G networks without having to change SIM cards or phone numbers. Instead, 5G users may be billed by flow, rate, bandwidth, delay and functions.

The company is also prioritizing innovations in personal applications such as live-streaming and high-definition video and gaming to improve user experience during pilot programs for 5G commercialization which will provide the necessary infrastructure support for future applications.

Since 2016, China Mobile has established a 5G joint innovation center and built 22 open laboratories and 5 industry alliances to boost innovation capability in the industry.

The company also launched China’s first 5G Multimedia Innovation Alliance in 2017 which covers aspects of digital media such as content production, transfer, distribution and consumption.
