Under the Theme: “Healthcare Innovation and Approaches: Future of Family Medicine”

Dubai – United Arab Emirates, 19 February, 2018: Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and President of Dubai Health Authority, the 5th edition of International Family Medicine – IFM 2018, will be held from the 26th to the 28th of February, at the Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre. The 5th edition of IFM will be held under the theme “Healthcare Innovation and Approaches: Future of Family Medicine”.

IFM2018, an event dedicated to comprehensive healthcare for the individual and the family, aims to create a perfect platform for delivering primary healthcare while also contributing directly to the promotion of suitable healthcare policies and healthier lifestyle patterns conducive for all members in the family which includes the provision of effective diagnosis, prevention and treatment methodologies.

Dr. Ibtesam Al Bastaki, Chairperson of the Scientific Committee, said: “In its 5th year, the annual International Family Medicine, IFM conference, aims to adopt a comprehensive approach in improving the lives of everyone in the family while also raising the standards of healthcare in the UAE. This year, our scientific committee has carefully selected many specialized topics such as: geriatric healthcare, diabetes, respiratory illness, diseases related to skin, medico-legal issues, anxiety disorders and innovation in healthcare to cater to needs of individuals of all ages, genders and diseases.”

Dr. Ibtesam stated, “Family medicine is one of the most important healthcare departments in the UAE and its demand has greatly increased over the last few years in Dubai. We are specifically addressing the role of family physicians concerned with women and children’s health, particularly ‘cervical cancer’ in women and ‘smoking’ in children and adolescents. Moreover, ‘physical inactivity’ and ‘obesity’ is an important topic in our scientific agenda and goes in line with the Dubai Fitness Challenge 30x30, which was launched by the Crown Prince of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.”

She added, “On an average nearly 15 family physicians graduate every year in Dubai, however, this number varies in strength across all the other emirates in the country. Although ‘budget constraints’ and the ‘lack of a dedicated accreditation center’ for family medicine are the key challenges for practitioners of family medicine, constant upgradation of knowledge and skills of physicians will go a long way in delivering excellence in this highly specialized department.”

According to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the world community including the UAE, in line with its Vision 2021, aims to provide proper access to screening, health checks and timely treatment and ensure a 25 percent reduction in premature mortality deaths from Cancer and Non-Communicable Diseases NCD’s by overcoming tobacco addiction, air pollution, unhealthy diets and physical inactivity among populations.

During the 3-day IFM conference running until the 28th of February, a number of sessions will be held by family physicians, scientists and researchers, which includes specialized discussions on ‘Diabetes’, Senior’s Health, Respiratory, A journey Out of Anxiety, Cervical Cancer: A Disease of the Past, Gastroenterology, Communication Skills, Innovation & New Approaches in PHC, Medico Legal, Children & Adolescent Health, Diabetes Management, Dermatology and Oral Presentations.

IFM 2018 is organized by INDEX Conferences and Exhibitions – member of INDEX Holding and is supported by Ministry of Health & Prevention in the UAE, Dubai Health Authority, Global Family Medicine Scientific Alliance, Health Ministers Council for Gulf Cooperation Council States, International Hospital Federation, Anti-Smoking International Alliance, INDEX Healthcare Management and Dubai Sports Council.
