Common embedded instructions simplify AC and servo drive programming

Machine builders are constantly looking for ways to improve their machines, whilst reducing costs and complexity. The new Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 527 AC drive from Rockwell Automation can help them achieve those important goals.

The PowerFlex 527 drive is the first AC drive designed to work exclusively with a Logix-based programmable automation controller (PAC). The drive leverages the benefits of the controller capabilities and uses a single software package – Rockwell Software Studio 5000 Logix Designer – to help simplify machine development and operation.

The PowerFlex 527 drive is an ideal complement to machines using Allen-Bradley CompactLogix, ControlLogix or GuardLogix PACs and Allen-Bradley Kinetix servo drives. The PowerFlex 527 drive uses embedded instructions shared with Kinetix servo drives, providing the same user experience for configuration, programming and control of both types of drives, helping save valuable engineering time.

The PowerFlex 527 drive also offers a low-cost solution for machine applications – such as pumps, fans, and in-feed and out-feed conveyors – that need simple speed control for induction motors. The servo drive handles the more precise motor-control operations involving speed, torque and position control.

“Until now, most machine builders have never considered programming their variable-frequency drives like they programme their servo drives – but they immediately understand the value,” said Jimmy Koh, Business Manager for Components Drives, Rockwell Automation. “We developed this drive to help remove some of the design complexity, provide the best-fit performance level, and deliver the next evolution of our Premier Integration.”

Premier Integration allows users to seamlessly integrate PowerFlex drives into a Rockwell Automation Integrated Architecture system, reducing the time and tools necessary to configure and programme a system. The PowerFlex 527 drive introduces an added level of Premier Integration by using the defined, motion instruction sets within Studio 5000 software for machine control and motor synchronisation.

Once programmed, drive-configuration files can be more easily transferred to a new machine without painstaking, line-by-line copying. Additionally, the Allen-Bradley Logix PAC family can automatically detect a replaced drive and download all configuration settings over EtherNet/IP, helping reduce downtime.

The PowerFlex 527 drive uses a standard EtherNet/IP infrastructure and features built-in, dual-port EtherNet/IP functionality. The infrastructure enables networked safety, which helps reduce the hardware, wiring and labour costs associated with implementing a SIL 3/PLe safety solution.

The use of networked safety also reduces panel space and allows access to more diagnostic data on machine-safety faults and causes, without requiring contactors or relays. The PowerFlex 527 drive is the first Allen-Bradley variable frequency drive to offer that capability. The drive also offers an embedded, safe torque-off function option for hardwired safety.

The PowerFlex 527 drive is available in five frame sizes, power ratings from 0.4 to 22 kW (0.5 to 30 Hp), and global voltage ratings of 100V to 600V.

Software from Rockwell Automation intuitively aligns control system with manufacturing operation for improved design experience

With the Rockwell Software Studio 5000 Logix Designer v24 software from Rockwell Automation, engineers have new design capabilities that can dramatically increase automation productivity, improve start-up time and reduce costs throughout a project’s lifecycle. The new additions include an application-centric view of code, enhanced workflows for more efficient reuse of content, and new collaborative tools that make it easier for multiple people to work together.

“Many machine builders and manufacturers struggle to support production changes due to unstructured code that is not easily understood and organised,” said Mike Brimmer, Product Manager, Rockwell Automation. “The Studio 5000 Logix Designer v24 software improves the design experience by more intuitively aligning the control system with the manufacturing operation, thus leading to enhanced automation productivity.”

As part of a contemporary automation-engineering design environment, the Studio 5000 Logix Designer v24 software is used to configure Allen-Bradley Logix5000 controllers from Rockwell Automation for discrete, process, batch, motion, safety and drive control.

The Studio 5000 Logix Designer v24 software features a new logical organiser that arranges programme code based on the users’ applications – rather than how the programmable controller executes. Logical organisation of programme code can help users identify and troubleshoot code faster for improved downtime recovery.

New library-management workflows, meanwhile, ease the ability to store and reuse intellectual property. Users can simply drag and drop modules of code from the Studio 5000 Logix Designer v24 library into a new project. The new workflows enable design engineers to reuse sections of code, which reduces design time and eases the ability to make future operational changes.

Automation system design and maintenance teams are increasingly global and specialised by function. This highlights an increasing need for more powerful collaborations tools. The Studio 5000 Logix Designer v24 software is addressing this need by building on its already strong baseline of multiuser capabilities, which allows many users to work separately and then bring their work back together.

In addition, the Studio 5000 Logix Designer v24 software supports the Allen-Bradley Kinetix 5500 servo drive with integrated safety to help machine builders reduce development and installation time. It also provides support that allows the Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 527 AC drive to be the first variable frequency drive to exclusively use the motion instruction sets within the Studio 5000 Logix Designer v24 software, for machine control and motor synchronisation.

Additionally, the Allen-Bradley Dynamix 1444 integrated condition-monitoring system allows manufacturers to leverage the Rockwell Automation Integrated Architecture system, rather than an isolated condition-monitoring device. It helps assess current equipment health, predict potential issues, and help avoid damage to critical machinery.

Complete integration in Logix Designer for safety, motion and control

Rapidly changing consumer demands require machine and equipment builders to reduce development and installation time whilst increasing machine flexibility. The Allen-Bradley Kinetix 5500 servo drive with integrated safety can help machine builders satisfy those requirements by taking advantage of a single EtherNet/IP network, as well as a common design environment with Rockwell Software Studio 5000 Logix Designer software.

The Kinetix 5500 servo drive with integrated safety builds on the foundation of the recently released Kinetix 5500 servo drive. With the same high-speed coordination to meet demanding motion requirements, the drive uses the EtherNet/IP network for streamlined machine safety functions. End users gain the benefit of improved personnel safety and increased machine uptime in the manufacturing facility.

“Production requirements are constantly changing for end users in the packaging, converting and material-handling industries, meaning their safety requirements may change as well,” said Mike Schweiner, Product Manager, Rockwell Automation. “Putting safety on the network eases the configuration of, and updates to, safety functions. This allows machine builders to be very flexible with their design and differentiate themselves in these industries, providing customers the means to more easily react to market changes.”

The EtherNet/IP network allows safety signals to travel via the same wires and IP addresses used for control and motion. This eliminates the need for a hardwired safety system. Reducing overall system wiring saves time and money in installation and removes potential points of failure, resulting in less troubleshooting and downtime.

Machine and equipment builders can more quickly install the drive and provide customers with greater ease of use via the Logix Designer development environment and Allen-Bradley GuardLogix safety controllers. In addition to motion and control parameters, end users now can configure the safety system within the Logix Designer software. They can unlatch the safe torque off function, programme an unlimited number of set points, change safety zoning, and re-use code to maintain system validation – all within a single software application.

End users also gain improved diagnostics information through the drive’s integration with the GuardLogix safety controller. Details on safety-related faults, such as safe torque off requests, are shown on the drive’s LCD display. This information can also be pulled into existing information databases and reporting solutions already in use, to deliver actionable safety information to users when and where they need it.

Lowering costs by simplifying project lifecycle and operational processes as well as ensuring regulatory compliance

Rockwell Automation, the world’s largest company dedicated to industrial automation and information, announced its participation in AsiaWater 2014, Asia’s leading water and wastewater industry event for 14 years. Rockwell Automation will be speaking at the forum and co-exhibiting with KVC Industrial Supplies Sdn Bhd, the company’s exclusive authorised distributor in Malaysia – excluding the oil and gas business. This exhibition and conference will be held on 19 - 21 March 2014 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, in conjunction with World Water Day.

Rockwell Automation’s activities during AsiaWater 2014 are related to the theme “Lower Your Project and Maintenance Costs” to help companies understand how to reduce project and lifecycle costs, optimise operational processes and adhere to real-time compliance and sustainability. “Water industry professionals around the world face major challenges including: ever-tightening water-quality standards; rising labour, operating and maintenance costs; increasing security and government regulations; expanding system capacity; advancing equipment reliability; and aging control and distribution systems that require upgrades,” said Thomas Schaefer, Rockwell Automation’s Industry Sales Manager, Global Water Wastewater Business. “Rockwell Automation’s water industry solutions will help manage the most difficult process-control challenges in wastewater, fresh water and desalinisation by combining the advanced system-wide capabilities of Integrated Architecture™, intelligent motor-control devices, and process automation-control systems.”

At the exhibition, Rockwell Automation will showcase its water industry solutions, including the PlantPAxTM Process Automation system, which provides enterprise-wide integration technology – helping manufacturers and processors migrate from an existing process-control solution or gain the benefits of a single plant-wide platform for the first time. In addition, the company will also exhibit its PowerFlex® Drives – for powerful performance and scalable, robust, and efficient motor control – as well as its integrated machine-safety solutions and smart-motor controllers. These products and technologies were developed to deliver best-in-class process-control solutions – resulting in maximised productivity, optimised flexibility and time-to-market, reduced cost of implementation, minimised lifecycle costs, unmatched regulatory compliance and planned future expandability.

Established in 2000, this biennial event will be held for the eighth time, as one of the most anticipated B2B exhibitions and conferences catering to businesses in the water and wastewater treatment and purification industries. Exhibitors and trade visitors will gather to discuss the latest related technologies, establish new business partnerships and source for new suppliers committed to advancing the value of sustainable water and the benefits of investing in infrastructure that produces long-lasting water solutions.

Co-organised by the Malaysian Water Association (MWA), AsiaWater 2014 is expecting over 700 exhibitors from 46 countries, showcasing more than 5,000 square metres of solutions to remain one of Asia’s largest expo events. With four concurrent conferences – AsiaWater Resource Expo & Forum, AsiaWater Resource 2014 Conference, AsiaWater 2014 Technology Symposium and 8th AsiaWater Conference – the tracks are expected to attract speakers and delegates dedicated to addressing the current and future challenges faced in the water industry, including industrial wastewater-treatment installations.

Together, the expo and conferences are set to draw 13,000 international industry professionals interested in diverse topics including water shortages.
